Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation in Waste Water - An Isotope Hydrological Perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
Excess nitrogen components must be removed from wastewater to protect the quality of the water bodies that it will be eventually discharged to. A conventional wastewater treatment system for nitrogen removal is often involved with two processes, nitrification and denitrification. Nitrification is mostly achieved by complete oxidation of ammonium (NH4+) to nitrite (NO2-) by the appropriate aerobic bacteria and then oxidation of the nitrite to nitrate ion (NO3-) by another variety of aerobic bacteria. Subsequently, the formed nitrate will be reduced to dinitrogen gas under anoxic conditions at the expense of organic carbon and released into the atmosphere as a harmless product (van Dongen et al., 2001). The introduction of oxygen into wastewater for nitrification requires a large amount of energy. Furthermore, the carbon source is often limited in wastewater, so purchasing of carbon source (typically methanol) is necessary too. A newly discovered anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) may circumvent the limitations and open up a new possibility for nitrogen removal from wastewater. The alternative approach is a microbiological involved activity which requires less energy and enables more efficiency on N removal.

Nitrogen isotope effects induced by anammox bacteria.
Nitrogen (N) isotope ratios ((15)N/(14)N) provide integrative constraints on the N inventory of the modern ocean. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), which converts ammonium and nitrite to dinitrogen gas (N2) and nitrate, is an important fixed N sink in marine ecosystems. We studied the so far unknown N isotope effects of anammox in batch culture experiments. Anammox preferentially removes ...

With rising environmental concerns on potable water safety and eutrophication, increased media attention and tighter environmental regulations, managing animal waste in an environmentally responsible and economically feasible way can be a challenge. In this study, the possibility of using granular anammox process for ammonia removal from swine waste treatment water was investigated. A rapid dec...
متن کاملDenitrification by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in a eutrophic lake
Understanding the mechanistic controls of microbial denitrification is of central importance to both environmental microbiology and ecosystem ecology. Loss of nitrate (NO3) is often attributed to carbon-driven (heterotrophic) denitrification. However, denitrification can also be coupled to sulfur (S) oxidation by chemolithoautotrophic bacteria. In the present study, we used an in situ stable is...
متن کاملAnaerobic ammonium oxidation and its contribution to nitrogen removal in China’s coastal wetlands
Over the past several decades, human activities have caused substantial enrichment of reactive nitrogen in China's coastal wetlands. Although anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), the process of oxidizing ammonium into dinitrogen gas through the reduction of nitrite, is identified as an important process for removing reactive nitrogen, little is known about the dynamics of anammox and its con...

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is recognized as an important process for nitrogen cycling, yet little is known about its role in the subsurface biosphere. In this study, we investigated the presence, abundance, and role of anammox bacteria in upland soil cores from Tianjin, China (20 m depth) and Basel, Switzerland (10 m depth), using isotope-tracing techniques, (q)PCR assays, and 16 S ...
